For ten years, The Singers have highlighted music of Minnesota Composers past and present. This year, celebrate Christmas with us by enjoying works from some of the key figures in our treasured choral landscape. A new memorial commission by conductor Matthew Culloton is surrounded by works from the Christiansen family, Leland Sateren, David Cherwien, and Stephen Paulus.

The Singers are thrilled to present this special collaboration concert with one of Minneapolis schools’ flagship ensembles, the Southwest Singers. Nathan Knoll is the dynamic leader of the choral program at Minneapolis Southwest High School, overseeing a large vocal department while supporting one of the state’s strongest musical theater programs. During Mr. Knoll’s tenure, the Southwest Singers have collaborated with many of the area’s finest choral ensembles including Cantus, VocalEssence and The Singers.

Reflective music graces the embracing acoustic of the Basilica of St. Mary. The Singers Anniversary Chorus debuts with a celebratory performance of one Mozart’s most jubilant and joyful works, Coronation Mass. Combined with Pärt’s austere Berliner Messe and Tavener’s haunting Funeral Ikos, this is sure to be a night of transcendence.

This activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund.
During The Singers’ first nine seasons, 62 works were given a world premiere performance. This concert celebrates our commitment to the composers of today, including our Composers-in-Residence Joshua Shank, Jocelyn Hagen, and Abbie Betinis. Four winning works from our Anniversary Call for Scores will be premiered alongside music of Timothy Takach, Patrick O’Shea, and Jake Runestad.
