“The Singers and I offer a season of refreshing and invigorating concerts,” said Artistic Director Matthew Culloton, “including mission-driven collaborations with performers, composers, and the entire community. We are especially excited to bookend the season with celebrations of American musical icons Leonard Bernstein and Robert Shaw.”
Leonard Bernstein: Chichester Psalms, October 24 & 25, 2015: The Singers mark the 25th anniversary of the legendary American musical icon’s passing with performances of Chichester Psalms, The Lark, and choruses from Candide, West Side Story, and MASS. This program is as eclectic as the composer himself, whose compositional styles ranged from classical works to unforgettable music for the Broadway stage. (10/24: St. Olaf Catholic, Mpls; 10/25: First Lutheran Church, Columbia Heights)
What Sweeter Music: Christmas with The Singers, December 6, 12, & 13, 2015: Uplifting music inspired by the Christmas holiday fills the concert halls in what has now become an annual favorite for hundreds in our community. Maybe it’s a lively Go, Tell it On the Mountain or The Wexford Carol that gets you in the holiday spirit – or maybe you need Franz Biebl’s Ave Maria or works by Rachmaninoff and Poulenc. As always, nobody greets the holidays like The Singers! (12/6: Wayzata Community Church; 12/12: St. Olaf Catholic, Mpls; 12/13: Nativity of Our Lord, St. Paul)
My Soul’s Repose, March 12, 2016: The Singers present the Minnesota premiere of a mystical new work for chorus and string quartet by Minneapolis-based composer Jake Runestad. Herbert Howells’ Requiem is a poignant, stirring remembrance of his young son, paired with Thomas Tomkin’s elegiac motet When David Heard. Riveting works by Ola Gjeilo and Richard Dering open a concert that is at times both dazzling and contemplative. (Nativity of Our Lord, St. Paul)
Community Sing: Gabriel Faure’s Requiem, March 18, 2016: Following the recent success of The Singers’ first Community Sing event with René Clausen, we will be offering another opportunity to sing shoulder to shoulder with the choir, raising our collective voices on one of the most cherished works of choral music. (House of Hope Presbyterian Church, St. Paul)
Composer’s Lab: Bringing a Score to Life, April 9, 2016: The Singers debut the exciting new Composers Lab, performing new choral works that are quite literally “hot off the press”! The Singers will present pieces by Timothy Takach, Linda Kachelmeier and Tesfa Wondemagegnehu from the Composers Lab, as well as a World Premiere by Craig Carnahan. This concert blends brand new works from Twin Cities composers with pieces premiered by The Singers over the past 11 seasons, including Joshua Shank’s Color Madrigals. (Sundin Hall at Hamline University, St. Paul)
Robert Shaw: A Centennial Celebration, May 21 & 22, 2016: To celebrate the 100th birthday of the choral master’s birth, The Singers will fashion a concert program drawn from works that Shaw championed on recordings and tours both domestic and international. From madrigals and motets to Debussy’s Trois Chansons – from Rachmaninoff’s Vespers to folk songs settings by Shaw and long-time collaborators Alice Parker and Gail Kubik, this concert is a retrospective of one of choral music’s most important and lasting legacies. (5/21: Nativity of Our Lord, St. Paul; 5/22: First Lutheran, Columbia Heights)
