MY SOUL’S REPOSE: J.S. Bach & Frank Martin [MAR. 2027]
The Singers’ annual presentation of sacred masterworks has become a hallmark of each concert season, with this year being no exception. J.S. Bach’s motets are some of the finest works in the choral canon, revered by artists and audiences alike. We present his funeral motet, Komm, Jesu, komm [BWV 229], based not on the Bible, but on a poem by Paul Thymich. Swiss composer Frank Martin’s Mass for Double Choir was written 100 years ago, and yet the work feels fresh and new still today. Last performed by The Singers a decade ago, the Mass is an imaginative and deeply moving piece that stayed hidden in a dresser drawer for decades – the composer considered it a matter between God and himself.
