Jocelyn Hagen: amass

For The Singer’s largest world premier project to date, the ensemble is joined by some of the region’s finest musicians in this concert-length accumulation of mass texts and spiritual poetry. Composer-in-residence Jocelyn Hagen utilizes a variety of musical textures, from cello quartet and solo voice to double choir ensemble as she brings voice to a new style of mass.

Sun., April 17, 2011 – 2:00 p.m. Nativity of Our Lord Catholic Church, St. Paul, MN

Whitman’s words have provided irresistible inspiration to generations of composers. Jeffrey Van collaborates with The Singers as guitarist on his own work, “A Procession Winding Around Me.” René Clausen’s “Three Whitman Settings” and “A Jubilant Song” use swirling melodies and lush harmonies to evoke the texts. The Singers are honored to share the stage with poet Michael Dennis Browne as he reads Whitman’s poetry throughout the concert.
