The Singers open the season with Maurice Duruflé’s transcending Requiem in the chamber orchestra version, featuring organist Aaron David Miller.  Also on the program are J.S. Bach’s Jesu, meine Freude and Gregorio Allegri’s soaring Miserere.

A veritable feast of holiday and Christmas works combine for a concert experience that only The Singers can provide!  Francis Poulenc’s invigorating Quatre Motets pour le Temps de Noel, Scandinavian works by Ola Gjeilo and Trond Kverno, and English carols by Richard Rodney Bennett, Peter Warlock and John Rutter are surrounded by fresh arrangements of traditional carols and songs of Christmas.

Musical reflections on life’s love and loss are sung in works by Johannes Brahms and in Morten Lauridsen’s Mid-Winter Songs.  A new commission by Joshua Shank will be premiered, commemorating the life of Benjamin Larson, a Luther College alum who lost his life in the Haitian earthquake.

In a most exciting venture, The Singers present works by three composers who have strongly impacted the recent choral music scene in America – David Lang, Tarik O’Regan (a Brit!) and Nico Muhly.  Winner of the 2008 Pulitzer Prize in Music, David Lang’s The Little Match Girl Passion is a musical setting of Hans Christian Andersen’s poignant tale.  Tarik O”Regan’s exhilarating work, The Ecstasies Above, is written for string quartet, eight vocal soloists and chorus.  Lastly, The Singers turn to works by Nico Muhly, whose choral works were recently recorded by the Los Angeles Master Chorale.

The Singers’ season concludes with a celebration of American folk songs, spirituals, and hymns in long-appreciated arrangements of William Dawson, Robert Shaw, Alice Parker, and Gail Kubik. Contemporary composers Carol Barnett and Rene Clausen will be featured alongside Sacred Harp tunes set by Abbie Betinis, Jocelyn Hagen, and Matthew Culloton. What a great way to welcome summer!

Co-commissioned by VocalEssence and a consortium of nation music organizations, William Bolcom’s dramatic Prometheus portrays the Greek god who stole fire from Zeus and gave it to mortals.  The piece will feature the artistry of pianist Jeffrey Biegel.  Co-commissioned by VocalEssence and the Pacific Symphony, Michael Daugherty’s compelling Mt. Rushmore sets the words of four great American presidents to music.
