In October of 1998, Matthew Shepard, a young, gay student at the University of Wyoming in Laramie was kidnapped, severely beaten, tied to a fence and left to die in a lonely field under a blanket of stars. Five days later, when Matt passed away, the world was watching. This three-part fusion oratorio speaks with a fresh and bold voice, incorporating a variety of musical styles seamlessly woven into a unified whole. Johnson sets a wide range of poetic and soulful texts by poets including Hildegard of Bingen, Lesléa Newman, Michael Dennis Browne, and Rumi. Passages from Matt’s personal journal, interviews and writings from his parents Judy and Dennis Shepard, newspaper reports and additional texts by Johnson and Browne are poignantly appointed throughout the work. – Program note from conspirare.org.

“The Singers pay tribute to Minnesota choral icon (and our guest of honor) Dale Warland on the eve of his 90th birthday. We celebrate Dale’s legacy through the presentation of works near and dear to his heart, intentionally curated by his protégé (and our leader) Matthew Culloton. A new work by Timothy C. Takach, with poetry by Brian Newhouse, will be given its world premiere performance. Expect poignant tributes, special guests, and a Dale Warland Singers Alumni Choir!

The Singers, under the artistic leadership of Matthew Culloton, return to live music making with a program that celebrates being together again while pausing to reflect on the moments that society has endured together these last two years. “Let Our Love Be Heard” features works by Minnesota composers Jake Runestad and Dale Warland, as well as music by Ysaye Barnwell, Alysia Lee, and Shawn Kirchner.
